Danté Project
First and Second-class pupils in Ballyboy were chosen to participate in a pilot project
called the Danté project, which is run by the Museum of Childhood Ireland Músaem Óige na hÉireann. One school in Ireland and one school in Italy were chosen for this pilot project. Majella and Sonia from the Museum of Childhood Ireland visited First and Second class.
They taught the pupils about Danté, a famous Italian poet, and his journey. The children imagined their own journey and drew some pictures of their journeys.
The children also learned some Italian words with the help of Sonia, who is from Italy.
The children also made their own laurel crowns with all the fabulous resources kindly supplied by Majella and Sonia. The laurel crown was presented to prestigious poets and Dante used to wear a laurel crown.
The children subsequently had a zoom call with the Italian class, and they had lots of questions to ask each other. They really enjoyed learning new words from each other and learning about what kinds of sports the Italian children play!
This pilot project aims to connect communities and to teach children in Ireland and Italy about Danté and it links with the Bloomsday project with is about teaching children about the Irish writer James Joyce. In Italy they have introduced the children to James Joyce and this project introduced Irish children to Dante. The children learned lots about Geography, History, Art, Poetry, and the Italian language.
